TO KNOW MORE...
WHY HIKE WITH A MOUNTAIN GUIDE?
A mountain guide is a professional who has specific knowledge and qualifications to lead people or groups through different mountain terrains.
Added value
Hiking with a guide brings peace of mind, with safety always the top priority. The guides know the terrain, monitor the weather before and during the hike, and are trained to handle emergency situations. This way, you can fully focus on enjoying the hike itself.
In addition, the service of our mountainguides focuses on:
- Route and time planning: not all beautiful trails follow the beaten path; sometimes we leave the markers behind or take a route that’s harder to find. When you join us, you don’t need to worry about reading the map. We set the pace, keep track of the time, and plan the breaks — all you have to do is enjoy the scenery.
- Personalization: a guide can adapt the route or excursion according to the level, experience and needs of the group.
- Local knowledge: perhaps our favourite aspect! In addition to guiding you through the mountains, we love to tell you about nature, its flora and fauna, local customs, geology and the history of the region. Through curiosities about the environment, we hope that after the hike you’ll appreciate nature even more.
DIFFICULTY LEVELS
How difficult is your mountain hike? You can assess it in several ways. In Spain, the difficulty of a trail is calculated using the MIDE Method from Montaña Segura. This method looks at four factors: the environment, navigation (how easy it is to find the trail), the type of terrain, and the physical effort required. Each factor is scored from 1 to 5.
Route difficulty
We can summarise the most common levels with approximate distances and elevation gains
as follows:
- Low difficulty: routes with an elevation gain of up to 600 m and a distance of up to 10 km. They do not present technical difficulties, which makes them suitable for beginners.
- Medium difficulty: routes for hikers with some experience, featuring elevation gains between 600 and 1,000 m and distances of 10 to 15 km. These trails may include rocky sections and uneven terrain.
- High difficulty: these routes require good physical fitness and previous experience. They feature elevation gains of 1,000 m or more and distances greater than 15 km. The terrain is more complex and includes challenging sections, such as scree slopes, rivers, and rocky areas where the use of hands is required.
Levels in the Cooperativa Guías del Pirineo
Within our cooperative, we always consider which route best suits the group. We take into account your experience, fitness, and preferences. Whether you choose an easy walk or a challenging full-day hike, we offer routes for every level, with a variety of durations and terrain.
